چکیده

A study of t'.e effects of sodium azide on the gas metabolism of Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa under aerobic conditions has been described (Lichstenm and Soule, 1944c). It was shown that the chemical exerted an inhibitory effect on the oxygen consumption of these bacteria, and the respiratory quQtients obtained suggested that the organisms were respiring anaerobically. The fac. that P. aeruginosa is able to grow readily in the absence of free oxygen, while B. subtilis is more strongly aerobic, may explain the differences in susceptibility of these two species of germs to the chemical. Since certain strains of streptococci, and lactobacilli are markedly resistant to the action of sodium azide using growth in the presence of the chemical as an index (Lichstein and Soule, 1944a), it appeared desirable to investigate the action of sodium azide on the metabolism of representative members of this genus.

Studies of the Effect of Sodium Azide on Microbic Growth and Respiration: I. The Action of Sodium Azide on Microbic Growth.

In recent years, publications from this laboratory (Snyder and Lichstein, 1940; Lichstein and Snyder, 1941; Lichstein, 1941) have indicated the value of sodium azide (NaN3) as an aid in the isolation of streptococci from clinical material containing "spreaders" and other interfering gram-negative organisms. The use of blood-infusion agar containing 0.02 per cent sodium azide for the cultivation...

Studies of the Effect of Sodium Azide on Microbic Growth and Respiration: II. The Action of Sodium Azide on Bacterial Catalase.

Although Keilin and Hartree (1934) and Blaschko (1935) have shown that sodium azide inhibits catalase derived from animal tissue, there is no information about its action on bacterial catalase. It seemed therefore desirable to make a quantitative study of the effects of sodium azide on catalase derived from this source. Since peroxides are metabolic products of many organisms, the inhibition of...

Fermentative Lactic Acid Production by Lactobacilli: Moser and Gompertz Kinetic Models

Lactic acid production in a batch submerged fermentation process by five Lactobacilli: bulgaricus, casei, lactis, delbrueckii and fermentum in lactose fortified whey culture were investigated. Kinetic behavior of Lactobacilli growth rate and lactose utilization was studied based on the Moser and Gompertz kinetic models. Trendline tool in Excel software was applied for fitness assessment of the ...

Efficient synthesis of arylaminotetrazoles as via [2+3] cycloaddition of nitriles and sodium azide via solid acid catalysis

The [3+2] cycloaddition between various nitriles and sodium azide proceeds smoothly in the presence of zeolite and sulfated Zircona as effective catalyst and in the water and DMF/MeOH, to give the corresponding arylaminotetrazoles in good to high yields. The reaction most probably precedes through the in situ formation of a catalyst azide species, followed by a successive [3+2] cycloaddition wi...
